Tadelakt is a durable and waterproof type of lime plaster. It is a traditional lime material which originates from Marrakech in Morocco where its history dates back over 2000 years. Tadelakt is used on both interiors and exteriors of buildings. As an eco-friendly building material, it has gained popularity over the last few years for its versatility and the range of natural and unique finishes. Another reason is the range of different shades of colour and effects that can be achieved using Tadelakt.
The surface of Tadelakt is treated and polished several times to bring out the finish of the plaster. Projects can take days or sometimes weeks because often the plaster is required to rest between steps to achieve the required effect. The final step is to treat the plaster with oleic acid (usually in the form of an olive oil soap) which gives it its luxurious depth and indeed hydrophobic characteristic which makes it suitable for the likes of basins, baths, showers and wetrooms.
Not only does Tadelakt look great, it’s also ecologically friendly, non toxic, CO2 absorbent, odourless and made from biodegradable ingredients.
